What is the best way to get rid of mice, without having to call in pest control?

We have a few mice living in our kitchen. I'm worried they'll multiply unless we sort out the problem. We don't want to poison them becasue they might die behind the counters where we can't find them and then decompose and leave a bad smell. Please help! What is the best way to get rid of mice, without having to call in pest control?
Get a cat!!!What is the best way to get rid of mice, without having to call in pest control?
Use traps, if you don't sort it they will multiply. Poison is effective, we put poison down as they were living in between the floor boards, it did work, but for a week after the smell was terrible, although it soon dispersed.

I know traps do seem cruel, but the death is usually pretty instant, you can buy card sheets that trap the mouse using a very strong glue, but then you have to dispose of a live mouse that you know will die, or kill it yourself, which isn't pleasant.
use a pair of hob nail boots
How about traps - not that kind to the mice but if you want to kill them it's pretty much a trap, poison or a cat! There are supposed to be natural ways to get rid of them - I think it's the smell of mint and, if you are in the UK, there is a special plug in thing which I think emits a high frequency pitch only mice can hear and it scares them. With the plug in though it's quite expensive (around 拢15 from DIY shops) and you might need one in each room. Good luck with the pesky things!
buy some mouse traps.. humane ones if your feeling kind.. and no matter what anybody tells you always use chocolate.. the little devils cannot resist chocolate..
Poison is the only way. They quite often die at the feeding table.
A cat

Glue traps are the best method to trap rats and mice.

I found detailed information at http://www.pests.in
Mice do not like moth balls, put some under the counters and where they are coming in
get a snake, or a cat
get a hungry cat
You can buy mouse traps for about a quid from B%26amp;Q (or similar shops). Then you will know exactly where to look for dead ones!
mouse traps with peanut butter. I put three under the sink one time and within one hour caught three. Do this for a week- go out and buy about four traps and set all of them at once in different places. After you catch a bunch, put out poison baits to make sure they will not return. Chances are you must have several in your house-kill them with traps first.
i discover that victor makes a prebaited trap. i bought 2 of them and caught 12 mice within 12 hours. they really work.
My two terriers are excellent - its all over really quick - REALLY!!!!!
Buy a cat
One of my friends has a cabin in the woods and only visits periodically. My friend advised me to place a small plate(she jsut uses small plastic paper plate) in all rooms with mothballs on them.she also places mothballs outside the cabin.
First start by sealing up all the spots that you think that they may be getting in.(cracks in foundation, around doors + windows, + pipes) Use that foam in a can.....then clean your house. put all the food away, so there is nothing for them to eat. If they are getting in your cabinets and eating boxed food, then get containers to store the boxed food in.(new metal garbage cans with lids work well) then set traps out. you can get the glue traps for baby mice, they usually eat what is in the spring trap but do not trigger the spring and spring traps for the adults.( use cold bacon fat) You'll be cleaned up in no time.
a cat or a border terrier they are both pretty efficient killers and wont leave a mess
