How long does it take for a birth control pill to kick in?

Oral contraceptives will normally take 1 complete cycle to reach maximum effectiveness. Use an alternate form of contraception until you start your second pack. How long does it take for a birth control pill to kick in?
That depends on when in her cycle a woman starts taking it.

If she starts on the first day of her menstruation, it will be effective immediately.

If she starts on a different moment, there will be an unsafe period of a week to a month, depending on which pill she is using.

Waiting one complete cycle (month) is always safe.

The doctor prescribing the pill will (or should!) always inform her when her pill will be reliable. If not, she should ask!How long does it take for a birth control pill to kick in?
